Words

words

My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your Word.  Psalm 119:28 (NIV)

Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.  John 6:68 (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  John 1:1 (NIV)

Words are important.  God makes that clear.  He gives us His words in the form of Scripture.  He gives us THE Word in the form of His Son.

Words are powerful.  The heavens and the earth were created through them.  I sometimes wonder if we underestimate the power they have.

Do you remember that childhood saying “Sticks and stones can hurt my bones, but words can never hurt me?”  Would that were true!

While all of this refers to the words of others, I can’t help but think about the impact of our own words.  Do we grouse and grumble?  Or do our words express gratitude?  Do we encourage others?  Are we discouraging to be around?

I have heard it said that we cannot hold two opposite thoughts at the same time.  We cannot be discouraged and speak encouraging words or have encouraging thoughts at the same time.

When we feel are feeling discouraged, down-hearted, full of pain, God has promises for us.  When we are weary from our illnesses or difficult times, when it is hard to keep on keeping on, we are promised we can find the strength we need to endure in God’s Word.  Our ultimate comfort comes from knowing not only God’s word – but God’s Word – His Son.

He has the words of eternal life.

What will you do with words today?

Father God, Thank you that you have given us the ultimate word.  Please help us to stay close to you, to your word, and to be careful of the words we use each day.  Amen and amen.
