Making the Most of It

opportunity

Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people),  Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15-16 Amplified Bible (AMP)

As we go from doctor visit to doctor visit this week (yesterday was consumed by another Chicago visit), I realize just how much time we spend at the various doctors that treat my husband, my son, and myself.

It's become a kind of joke that our doctors offices and their staff have become a kind of second family to us.  Most know all of the various members of my family who have driven us to appointments, and know most of the ins and outs of our lives.

It's rather nice to be greeted with a sincere welcome and questions about the latest news in our family journey.  I'd rather I'd not be in the position for this to happen and not need so much medical attention, but the familiarity is comforting.  I know them.  They know me.

I see such a parallel to my walk with Christ.  I know that when I go to Him, my welcome is always sincere.  He's interested in all parts of my life.  And yes, the familiarity is comforting.  I am getting to know Him and He knows me.

I often wonder about the people in those offices.  Do they know Christ?  Do they walk with Him?  Are they learning more about Him day by day?

I sometimes wonder if they can see Him in me.  I pray so. I used to think that being as homebound as I am keeps me from being a light for Him.  I've realized that my light can "shine" in the doctor's offices just as well as any where else!

How do you use these opportunities?  (Do you even view the doctor's office as an opportunity?)  Perhaps that is one of the best places we can be a witness - even a silent one.  Our attitude toward our illness, a smile to a staff member, even remembering their name.  (Now THAT can be challenging for me!)

I have seen cantankerous people in the doctor's office.  Complaining if the doctor is late, spouting how miserable they are to anyone who will listen.  I know there are times I see the doctor and I am in such pain that I can do nothing more than sit here and wait.  But there are other times.  I can dress as nicely as I can.  Put on a touch of makeup if I'm feeling good enough, and go in with a smile and a warm "Hello."

I pray I warm their world a bit as well.

Father God, I pray you bring us to see that every situation is a potential opportunity to show others who You are.  May they see a difference in us that can only be attributed to You.   Amen and Amen
