If the World Were Like Me ...

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:  Philippians 2:5

I’ve mentioned before my penchant for quotes.  I read one today that stopped me dead in my tracks.  You know - the kind of words that simply pierce your heart?

If the world were like me, what kind of a world would this world be?               Author Unknown

I stopped - read it, and then read it again.  Oh my!  The implications of those words!  What I would like to say is that it would be a kind, loving, giving, and Godly world.  At least - I would like that to be the answer.

However, if I look honestly at myself, I would have to say that sometimes the world might be one that feels without purpose, haphazard, sometimes depressed and sad, and not always walking as closely to God as I would have it.

How ironic, since I am in control of how I am.  Now, I don’t mean physically.  I do have some control over that.  I can get enough sleep (or try to).  I can eat right.  I can force myself to do those loathsome bed exercises (ok, I will grudgingly agree I feel better if I do them).  But for a large part of my physical self, things are the way they are.

Now, here is the hard part.  I have control over my attitude, too. (Ick, ick!  I hate to say that ... nooooooooooooo, I don’t WANT to be responsible for my attitude!)

Sigh.

But, even God’s word says it is true.  And not just once - but at least twice ...

1 Peter 4:1

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.

Oh how I want to wiggle out of this one somehow.  I want an excuse for having a bad attitude!  “It’s been a bad day!” or “But I HURT!”.  But, no.  There is no excuse.

Even with multiple chronic challenges and life events that have scarred me, I am still responsible for my attitude.

What kind of a world do I want this to be?  Well, I guess that depends in part on me.  Maybe the question is:  With God’s help, what kind of a person do I choose to be?”

Father God, I ask for your mercy, grace, and blessing to be poured out in full on every person who reads these words.  Draw each one and nourish them with your Spirit and Your word. Help us to be the kind of people that we wish characterized this world.  Let us do what we can, when we can, to show You to this fallen world.  Amen.
