Devotional: Amazing Grace

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me, And delivered me from all my fears."  Psalm 34:4

I am working my way through the book of Psalms.  It amazes me how many verses jump out at me when I need them. Today I need them as I feel those tiny tendrils of fear begin to creep in and chill my heart.

At the doctor's for something else, I mentioned a funny feeling I get in my throat sometimes.  After checking it out, the doc said, "How long has it been since you've had a scan of your thyroid done."

What if I Don't Want to Rejoice Today?

Be glad in Jehovah, and rejoice, ye righteous; And shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.          Psalm 32:11

It's one of those mornings.  I've been dealing with a kidney stone for almost a week and I'm worn out.  I'm using a home-based schooling for my kids and we are behind.  The kids wander off task.  To say I am frustrated is an understatement.

I'm grumpy.  I want to go back to sleep.  I push myself to do my morning routine. …

When God Feels Far Away

alone

You know those times.  You can pray and pray - search with your heart - and it feels as if God is nowhere to be found.  You might feel abandoned by God.  Your life seems empty.  You feel so alone.  You wonder if your prayers are even heard.

I've been there - and I'm sure you have been as well.  I think it's almost a given for those of us with chronic illnesses and other life challenges.  There are simply time when God feels far away.  …

A Matter of the Heart

I like to reread books.  I saw a note in a book I read nine years ago.  “I have gotten afraid of my heart.”  Rather in interesting case of synchronicity.

My problems started with atrial fibrillation (your atrium starts beating erratically) about that same time.  Six years later, during an episode of afib, I threw a clot and had a mild stroke. After several years of no episodes, they've started up again.  What do I do when I'm not at ease?  …

Simplicity and Joy

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14  NIV

There is still life.  And life in abundance.  Somedays, I forget that.  Life has gotten so complicated for me.  For my family.  I have felt flat.  Not wanting to move.  Not seeing any joy.  I once knew it well. Where did it go?  Where is it now?

I realize I have been, once again, striking out on my own and trying to forge my own path.  …

What Am I Going To Do?

seek find

How often I have heard the lament, “I don’t know what I am going to do!”  These words are usually uttered in situations where chaos seems to reign.  I know I have been there myself.  Yet, how often we totally ignore that Scripture tells us exactly what to do!

Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. 1 Chronicles 16:11

It is so easy to lose our focus on God when problems whirl around us.  I am reminded of the eye of a hurricane – where all is still and calm, while the winds of tragedy and destruction whirl rapidly around the calm.  …

Devotional: God Knows

Have you ever felt your life is a jig-saw puzzle?  I know I have.  Some days I feel like I am a puzzle with a big hole in the middle and no pieces to place in it.  Other days, I feel as if I have puzzle pieces … and no place to put them. This week has felt as if someone simply took the box of pieces and threw them on the floor.

Some days I just get plain tired of trying to make the pieces fit.  What if I end up with no picture at the end of all my hard work?  …

Chance Encounters?

Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.  (Ephesians 6:21-22, NIV)

God clearly knows we are going to need encouragement.  If it is important enough for him to include it in His word, it’s something He knows we are going to need at some point in our lives.

Let Your Light Shine ...

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16 NASB).

You might be saying to yourself, “How in the world can I be a light for the world?  …

For the Glory of God

Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.  I Corinthians 10:31

I like to write.  That might be an obvious statement.  Words have always brought me joy.  Finding the right words to describe something, painting word pictures, expressing what I am unable to express orally gives me great satisfaction.  …

Envy or Gratitude

This is a post from December 2008.  I'd like to think I was past these reactions, but a recent exchange with a friend who was seeing the fruits from a very successful life left me feeling more sorry for myself than happy for her.  I felt this needed a reposting.

A sound heart is the life of the flesh, but envy is rottenness to the bones.   (Proverbs 14:30)  NIV

I don’t know about you, but when I read these words a large “OUCH!” …

Dying to Self - Part 2

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
NIV

One thing I have noticed in my life is that God often, very often challenges me to practice what I preach.  I put the words out there and he says, "deni ... do you mean this?  You are saying it to others.  Have you mastered it yourself?  …
